My Story

I've been there before

Back in 2000, I made the brave decision to begin my recovery from addiction, a hard first step for so many of us. Self-medication was my coping mechanism for dealing with neurodivergence I didn’t even know I had. Pursuing recovery was tough, but it was the most important thing I could have done for myself. I began to get better, and then life got better, too. I gave birth to a beautiful daughter and son and began training to be a nurse to help others experiencing challenges just like mine.

Recognising the need for personalised support

In 2008, I achieved my ambition of qualifying as a nurse. However, I quickly realised that there was still a social stigma attached to mental health and substance abuse that was preventing people seeking the support they needed. Even when they did seek it, they often felt uncomfortable about receiving the support and this meant it could be ineffective.

And it wasn't in just one sector or discipline. It became clear to me that this was a pattern that wasn't changing no matter how hard we pushed to educate everyone. This is something that was at the forefront of my mind during my career and got me reflecting on my own relationship with recovery. I felt the most comfortable when the support was tailored to me, creating a space for me just to be myself without platitudes or judgement.

That was the spark of inspiration which eventually became Therapeutic Navigation Services. I offer integrative counselling that recognises that people cannot fit into moulds and specific categories. Everyone is their own person and deserves a personalised, straight-talking service built in collaboration with them.

Going solo

I completed my counselling qualifications in 2017. At this point, whilst working in palliative care, I’d developed a strong interest in counselling patients and families as they faced end-of-life care for themselves or loved ones.

I was diagnosed with ADHD and menopause in 2020, which really helped me understand my behaviours, thoughts and feelings. But it also highlighted the extreme lack of support out there for neurodiverse individuals like myself, especially those struggling with addictions.

So that became the core of my mission. To counsel and coach those seeking answers. People striving to shape a better life but don’t know where to start.
